Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough.

Interesting to know!

  • “Frozen,” which opened in 2013, is the highest grossing animated film of all time.
  • “Frozen” won an Academy Award® for best animated feature film of the year. The film’s iconic song, “Let It Go,” with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, also won an Oscar® for best achievement in music written for motion picture, original song.

About Toy Story 4:

Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.

Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”), and produced by Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”), Disney·Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” ventures to U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.

Talking with Marc Shaiman And Scott Wittman About The Magic Behind The Music In Mary Poppins Returns

Talking with Marc Shaiman And Scott Wittman About The Magic Behind The Music In Mary Poppins Returns

Talking with Marc Shaiman And Scott Wittman About The Magic Behind The Music In Mary Poppins Returns.  With a movie like Mary Poppins Returns, the songwriters are really the unsung (pun totally intended) heroes of the show!

These are two of the most warm men you will meet in Hollywood.  From the moment they walked into the room, we could feel the love they have for what they do, their music, and Mary Poppins.  It has been such an amazing journey through Mary Poppins Returns and to end it with the songwriters just seems perfect!  Well, practically perfect in every way.  The interview started with Scott Wittman sitting down and telling us how fantastic everyone feels after leaving the interviews with the Disney bloggers.  This is, again, such a huge honor because we, certainly, have felt the same way along the way with our interviews with the cast and film makers.

I know that Richard Sherman was working as a consultant with you. What was that like?

Scott Wittman: Oh, that was heaven. I mean, that was really heaven.  And then last week, we got to spend a whole day with him.   We got to ask him all those questions….

Marc Shaiman: I became four years old. I mean, there he was in front of me and I got to ask him, why’d you write this song and why was it in this key? What was that chord? And the choices of words. What was Walt Disney like – I don’t remember his answers.

Did you ever talk about family? Or what’s going on in the world?

Marc Shaiman:  Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, it was so surreal that I don’t remember any of his answers. But the glorious part of it was that, he loved our movies so much.   He really felt like it was in good hands. And that, in some way, he said to us that, the baton had been passed.

Scott Wittman: So that was a glorious.

Marc Shaiman:  And I got right up in his face, like when you’re playing poker and someone has a tale.  He was like, ‘Are you blind?’ And I was like, you really seemed sincere.  But, it was the greatest compliment we could have ever ever gotten. The way he looked at us. And talked to us and treated us as – I wouldn’t say equals. But worthy at least to be in the room with him.

Have you stayed true to the original, in terms of music?

Scott Wittman: Well, I think that we went back to the books.   There were so many more adventures in all the stories. And some of them just cried out to be sung. And so we wanted – I think – and Lin said it great. He said, “You know what’s great about it, is our movie rhymes with the first movie.” And that’s a huge compliment, too. But just the – all the material was in the books. And then we had Emily and Lin and we had them right from the beginning.  We got to sculpt all this material on them.  But we knew we had it right so it sounded like it was in the same neighborhood of the first movie. And also the first movie was like our teacher.

Obviously, Emily’s take on it is so singular to her. So that also freed us up.  She just came in with such confidence. And wit. And so it was easy to kind of fit these pieces on.

Marc Shaiman:   When we first sit down to write – we had a great four months of working with Rob and his partner John and the screenwriter, David Magee.  We really start from the beginning of the movie. They had the idea that it would be about Michael Banks, a recent widower. And that would be the crux of what’s going on.  Then we just pieced the movie scene by scene.   Figuring out where to put a song. And how it would speak to what was going on. Or further what was going on.

Scott Wittman:  It was interesting, with Richard Sherman, because in the first movie, they had musicalized a sequence that got cut.
And we tried to musicalize the same sequence. And it got cut.

When you’re writing a song and you’re writing to the singer’s abilities, how are you keeping with the theme of the movie?

Marc Shaiman: You’re juggling. Which, you don’t have to explain to Moms.  Just multitasking creatively. And you’ve got the director. The director is the final say. Our own taste. I mean, with Scott and I sometimes, do have different ideas about where it might go. And then there’s the performer.

Scott Wittman:  But then there’s Emily, who had just done this very intense drama. So her voice was way, was here. So then she started working with a voice teacher, to get it – it’s like a muscle that has to come back.

Marc Shaiman:  It was nice to not go too high. So that she wouldn’t be so compared to Julie Andrews.  It’s nice that her voice sits in a slightly different place than Julie Andrews’.   That would be another reason why sometimes people ask, Are the original songs sung in the movie? As you
hopefully notice in the score, I made use of them.  But it would be unfair to performers to ask them to actually sing a song that Julie Andrews sang, or that Dick Van Dyke sang.  Rob and Marc Platt were very confident that we should not do that.

What is your dream?

Scott Wittman:  This was a dream.

Marc Shaiman:  Oh, yes. It could not get better than this. It can’t. For a movie, musical, I can’t anticipate anything.

Scott Wittman: We’re in another project now. We’re doing a book for Broadway, a new musical. It’s Some Like It Hot. So yeah.

Talk about the chase part of the animation sequence.

Pixie Davies: That was so much fun. It was, because the music was being played, I actually felt like we were actually in a chase and it was really  awesome.

How did you feel once you saw the animation completed?

Pixie Davies: It was really surprising because you don’t know all the details that are gonna be there, and then you watch it and it’s there.

What was your favorite part of filming the movie?

Joel Dawson: I really liked the part when I had to dive through the bushes and then got dragged along by the kite. That was a really fun scene.

And what about you?

Pixie Davies: I think it was ‘Trip A Little Light Fantastic’ because it was just incredible watching the dance. It just gets better every time.

What did you think of the costumes you guys got to wear?

Pixie Davies: They were beautiful. They were. I really liked them ‘cause I like dressing kind of funky. And it was really awesome wearing some really  cool clothes from another century.

Did you all see the original Mary Poppins?

Pixie Davies: Yes we did, yeah. It was my favorite film before I was in this one.

How did you feel when you found out you got the part?

Pixie Davies: I thought I was gonna burst.

And how did you feel?

Joel Dawson:  Well my agent already knew so she came over and as she was there, then Rob Marshall called me and he said we want you to have the part. And then I had it on speakerphone and everyone was just so silent and my eyes were watering. And my mum was squealing after the phone call.

What is your favorite song in the movie?

Joel Dawson: Underneath the London Sky.

Pixie Davies: I do really like that one.

Joel Dawson: Yeah, that one is really nice.

Pixie Davies:  ‘Trip A Little Light Fantastic’, I want to say it’s just a good song.  It’s really like fun and dancie.

Joel Dawson:  They’re all really good. Really it’s very hard to choose.

How long did you film this movie for?

Pixie Davies: Seven months. Two months of rehearsals, five months of shooting.

What did you guys do in between filming?

Pixie Davies: We had tutoring a lot, which was, it was okay, you know, it was tutoring. But we had quite a lot of fun. We had tents, and there was a place the most magical place on earth. There was lots of food and it was great.

Joel Dawson:  I remember one day they had a chocolate water fountain with marshmallows and cookies.

Pixie Davies: It was great.

Joel Dawson:  And strawberries.

Were you celebrating something or was it just there?

Pixie Davies:  It was just there, I think. I think it was just there, yeah. There was loads of fun surprises like that. And you were just like oh okay, wow.

How was the scene with Meryl Streep?

Pixie Davies: It was really, really, really crazy, because you don’t look at things in that perspective, ever, unless you look between your legs and  nobody really does that. And so that was really fun.

Was there anything surprising when you saw the film?

Pixie Davies: Yeah, the green screen because you don’t know when, ‘cause you’re in a green room and then you watch the film and you’re like oh, that’s so detailed. And even if you were, like on topsies, there are things on the camera that it picks up, that you don’t pick up in your eye, and you sort of watch the film and you’re like ‘oh, I didn’t realize that was there’, or ‘oh yeah, I remember that’. And then sometimes it’s just a bit of a surprise ‘cause if you were actually there then it’s a bit confusing if you see something that wasn’t there.

Was there anything that you learned from the older actors on set?

Pixie Davies: Just be yourself, do what you think is right, and then if you get a note, then you get a note. It’s okay.

What did you enjoy the most about working under Rob Marshall’s direction?

Pixie Davies: He’s such a lovely director, honestly. He is the nicest man. And he’s so helpful because if you don’t really understand the note then he’ll explain it a bit more, or he’s just such a nice, lovely man.

What was it like working with Dick Van Dyke?

Pixie Davies: Amazing. Words cannot describe it. It was so incredible because he was in the first one and it’s just iconic. He’s a legend. And well he’s a legend to me because he was in the first one. He was in a lot of other Disney movies and yeah, it was really, really special.

Besides Mary Poppins, what’s your favorite Disney movie?

Pixie Davies: I really like The Little Mermaid and The Aristocats, and Saving Mr. Banks because it’s fun seeing it all behind the scenes.  I like  Pocahontas.  I like all the Disney movies, like the classic Disney movies.

Rob Marshall walked in and, immediately, the sound of our applause engulfed the room.  We had all been so moved by watching Mary Poppins Returns the night before, we needed to show Rob Marshall how much we loved his work!  When he sat down to talk to us, we could feel the energy change.  He is such a caring soul and that energy and feeling surrounded him.  His smile was warm.  His eyes were bright.  And the excitement in his voice when he talked about Mary Poppins Returns was magical!

Rob Marshall started our interview with this.  This, about the bloggers in the room with him.  What an honor it was for me to be sitting among the women who Rob Marshall calls his favorite!

“You know I’ve said this to Leslie, my Publicist, it’s always my favorite moment to be with you guys.  No it is.
It’s a whole different experience so thank you.” ~Rob Marshall

How do you convince your Actors that everything is possible even when they’re scared of heights? When they don’t consider themselves Singers or Dancers in other films that you have made?

Rob Marshall: You know it’s sort of interesting when I work with Actors I really find they need to feel positive reinforcement you know and it’s such a simple thing to do. It’s like being a really good parent you know. And you try and achieve that when we’re working you know.

For instance, as an example Ben Whishaw, who plays Michael Banks, he’s never sung before. He was sort of nervous about how do you do that and I always feel that people can do so much. It’s just feeling that they can and knowing that they can.  I like to protect them in rehearsals when– you know we had over 2 months of rehearsal.  So it was during that time that you can fail and be bad and then learn to get better and not feel judged. That’s a really important thing.

I like to protect Actors to make them feel they can do things and try things. And everybody was so nervous on this film because you we were  following that extraordinary film that means so much to me and so much to so many people.  I’m sure everybody in this room.  So we knew we were doing the impossible, but I honestly felt like if we did it together from the right place with a great respect for the first film and found our own way at the same time then we would at least have done it in the right way.  Then you hope that it works.

You’ve mentioned that you had found the original table from the first movie.  Did you use any other props from the first film?

Rob Marshall:  Well, here’s the thing, I visited the Disney archives.   They didn’t really have the archives in the 60’s, not much, there’s some. What there is I saw so you remember the blocks from Mary Poppins? We replicated the blocks. They didn’t give us the blocks, but we replicated the blocks. They’re in the attic if you look. Also the snow globe.  We replicated that as well. So the only real thing is that table in the front hall, which I saw at Club 33 at Disneyland and I said, “That’s in the movie if the let us have it” and they did. So that was really moving to me.   The kite, of course, we replicated that and created our own version of the kite.  Those very specific things from the first film that I really wanted to hold onto if I could.  That’s for the people who love the first film who know it. It’s those first little Easter eggs.  I use myself as honestly as a barometer the whole time. What would I wanna’ see?

How was it to work with Dick Van Dyke?

Rob Marshall:   There’s no one like him. I was so excited and nervous to even call him to ask him to do this, you know.  Because he’s a hero for me. I mean and that’s the Dick Van Dyke Show for me honestly. Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang you know all of it.  Bye Bye Birdie, all of it, so you know talking to him he just disarms you immediately. He’s so joyous and it’s just sort of who he is and he said yes so quickly.   He was excited to be part of it.

When he came onto the set he honest to God grabbed my arm as we were walking on. He said, “I feel the same spirit here on this set that I did you know in the first film.” And I thought okay well that’s everything. That’s all I need to hear. That was everything for me to hear that from him.

Was it really him dancing?

Rob Marshall:  Oh yes,  all of it. In fact, I said to Lin and Emily, “If he falls off that desk you’re dead.”  Well I said you’re spotting him. I mean who else? There’s no one there. I said, “You are spotting him. So if he starts to wobble I want you to jump in.” Of course he was perfectly fine.

Tell us about the magical bathtub scene

Rob Marshall:  Well, it’s her first adventure. She arrives and so you have to look for something.  The great thing about the P.L. Travers books is that even though there’s no narrative to any them they’re all just episodic.  It’s all about taking an ordinary everyday event and turning it into something magical. An adventure that’s fun and even cleaning up your room turns into an adventure in the first film, right? So I was looking for something that kids hate and it’s taking a bath.

They’re so cynical, the kids, you know except for the little one who loves her and believes.  But they’re all sort of judgmental and wary.  I thought, you know, the great thing about Mary Poppins is she does these adventures, but denies them ever happening.  She kinda’ just does them without you know announcing them.  And all of a sudden that Dolphin comes up, she goes not yet, and things like that. You know what’s going on.  But I thought that could open up to a beautiful world and there is an underwater adventure. It’s not from a bathtub, but there is an underwater adventure in one of the Poppins books.

I thought, well we could use sort of the feeling of the P.L. Travers underwater, and then I came up with this idea of her seeing all the people from the neighborhood below the water as they’re moving through and trying to open the eyes of these kids that have grown up too fast; been forced to become adults too quickly.

The animation sequences were amazing and beautiful and so clean. And I just wanna know about the process.

Rob Marshall:  Thank you for asking about that really because that was the most challenging part of the whole film making and it’s the first thing we shot, right away, because the Animators.  It’s all hand drawn animation, every frame.   We needed to get that material to the Animators right away.  The reason our post production was I think close to 14, 15 months was because of the hand drawn animation. They needed that time.  Can you imagine flip-draw? That crazy; it’s so hard. I went and visited them.

I would say the majority of them came out of retirement to do this. It’s kind of a lost art, although I have just to say I was somewhat hopeful because a lot of the Artists there really were also in their 20’s who were more interested in working on the hand drawn animation than the computer generated work.   That was really good.  In a funny I thought; it will seem fresh because we haven’t seen it for so long.  We haven’t seen that beautiful artistry of that work.

Putting it all together….

Rob Marshall:  Putting that together we started with the musical number ‘Covers Not The Book’ and we had to shoot it like literally 3 different times. The first time you shoot it you shoot it with Mary Poppins. Let’s just for instance, say Mary Poppins and the Penguins that section.  It’ll be Mary Poppins and then we would have Reference Dancers being the Penguins.  Then we would take them out and she would dance alone and pretend they’re there. And then I would take Mary out and put just the Penguin Reference Dancers in so that the Animators would know exactly how, so all that’s very specifically  choreographed.

The Flamingos.  You know ‘cause I wanted to be able to control the choreography of even that.  The layers of it were so complicated you know. You walk into a huge green room and I’m trying to pretend that they’re in a carriage.  The carriage isn’t moving because that’s all background, but the kids have to have an eye line that watches like a big giraffe go by. And we have this huge Giraffe, for instance, on a pole just walking it past so the kids are imagining it.  Everybody had to really launch their imagination to see what it was gonna be.  But I don’t think anybody quite expected what it was going to end up being until they saw it. And that was mind blowing for Lin and Emily and the kids. They were blown away by, “Wow that’s what we were doing.”

Talking To Ben Whishaw & Emily Mortimer The Grown Up Michael & Jane Banks In Mary Poppins Returns.  Do you remember Michael and Jane Banks from Mary Poppins?  They were adorable.  Well, let me tell you, they are just as adorable, all grown up, in Mary Poppins Returns!

When Ben and Emily walked into the room everyone applauded.  It was obvious everyone was in awe of their performance as the grown up Michael and Jane Banks in Mary Poppins Returns.  We had all seen the film the night before.  I have never seen a better sibling chemistry outside of my own children.  I had to question, myself, if they were really siblings or not.  The way the look at each other and play off of each other is the sweetest feeling.  It was easy to tell that they really knew each other well and had spent a lot of time together in the making of Mary Poppins Returns.  Both Ben and Emily are very soft-spoken, genuinely humble people.  I could not imagine a more perfect duo to play Michael and Jane Banks.  I kept seeing my own children in the two of them.  This truly is the sweetest sibling relationship I’ve seen played out on the big screen!

How do you work joy and wonder into your life?

Emily Mortimer:  I’ve got two kids, and I know it’s…Cliches are true! I mean, that, that’s why they’re cliches.

We’ve had such a sweet time together this these last few days. I just kind of looking looking over at him, and seeing his little face. Is… just, I don’t know. It just makes it all seem okay. You know.

Did your children see the old one and now have seen the new one?

Emily Mortimer:  Neither of them have seen the new one yet.  They love the old one.  They’re psyched! They’re totally pumped about the whole thing.  We were in Barnes & Noble the other day and she found the book of Mary Poppins Returns, which I didn’t realize they’d even done the book of Mary Poppins.  Emily Blunt was on the front and then she found a photo of me.   She’s never been more impressed by me ever.  It was so funny. She kept telling everyone we met “Mom’s in a book!”

Rob Marshall said last night he got his first choice of all the actors.

How does it feel for him saying that, and to be in such an iconic remake of a movie?

Ben Whishaw: When Rob likes you, he really, really, really, really likes you.  He doesn’t hold back. You feel his love. You feel his excitement about what you might bring to the table.

Emily Mortimer:  My dad always said that if you tell people they’re beautiful or wonderful and clever and talented and special and amazing, they are and that’s what we feel.  But yeah, he’s so encouraging and makes you feel special.

Wasn’t Karen the original Jane that had a cameo in the movie.

Did you get a chance to talk to her about taking on such an iconic role?

Emily Mortimer:  Well, we did. We had like, half a day with her, didn’t we?  She just hung out with us and did the little scene. We walked with her onto the set. For the first time, she saw Cherry Tree Lane since she was a little girl.  She was really moved, and sort of blown away by the whole thing. We talked about how making the movie and how she was a little English school girl and had been transported to LA because they shot the original movie in Los Angeles, unlike our movie. And so, how kind of bizarre that was.  It was just an extraordinary thing to have these connections to the original movie.  It felt so validating that the were excited about it, and into it.

What was the most challenging scene for you both to create?

Ben Whishaw:  I think that the final scene when we’re on the balloons was quite challenging.  Because that had to be the climactic moment.  It’s weirdly much easier sometimes to play misery and grief or whatever. But, being open-hearted and happy can be quite hard.

Emily Mortimer:  Especially when you’ve been miserable the whole movie.

The sibling chemistry that you guys play on camera is phenomenal.

Is there anything that you did special to be able to do that?

Ben Whishaw: We didn’t.  We were really lucky. We just immediately got on, and enjoyed each other’s company, and giggled about things, and gossiped. and…

Emily Mortimer:  We had an awful lot of time to get there.  Waiting to go on for rehearsals, and there were weeks and weeks of rehearsals.  Then sitting around on the set for months, months, months together.

Do you have favorite scene from the movie?

Ben Whishaw: I really love the big dance number “Trip a little light fantastic.”  I’m just knocked out by it.

Emily Mortimer: I’m the same. I think it’s amazing.  You just kind of can’t catch your breath almost. Like I keep saying, it’s like intravenous entertainment the film.  Just when you think you’ve had enough, it’s like, you’ve just gorged yourself.  Then along comes Dick Van Dyke, and… then there’s that dance.   And just, like, more, more, more, more. It’s amazing. It’s so very cool.
