DIY Heart Pocket Hand Warmers
My kids LOVE these! I am now making many different shapes and colors so my son has some to put in his pockets for school.
Gather your supplies:
- Felt (It’s $0.26 per sheet at Walmart and one sheet will make approximately 3-4 warmers)
- Thread
- Sewing needle
- Rice
- Essential Oil (Optional)
Directions
Fold your felt and cut your shape. This will give you two of the same exact shape. I printed out a heart shape and pinned it on my felt as a guide and it worked perfectly! This will be the front and back of the pocket warmer. We did the heart shape for Valentine’s Day, but are working on other shapes that are less “girly” for my son LOL.
Stitch along the edges with your needle and thread, leaving a small hole to fill with rice. I used a basic running stitch. This is a super easy stitch and looks cute for this project. I then filled my warmer with about 2 tablespoons of rice with essential oil. I used peppermint oil because that’s what I had on hand, but you can use any oil you like. Lavender essential oil and rosemary are both great for this project. Finally, you can finish your stitching and tie it off. I always put a couple of extra stitches at the end to secure it a little better.
How to use your hand warmer:
Simply heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds with a cup of water then put immediately into a coat pocket. Putting a cup of water in the microwave when you heat your warmer keeps the rice from scorching. The essential oil will fill your child’s pockets and hands with a nice fragrance and they’ll be warm and toasty! These are also great to keep around when they come inside from playing.

January 9, 2018What a cute idea! My kids have just started felt sewing and this is a great project for them!! I do have a concern… if you put essential oils with the rice they will get on the kids hands. The oils neat may burn the skin, especially the peppermint!! (imagine if they rub their eyes after handling :-/ ) But dried lavender and maybe dried chamomile would still leave a nice scent and be safer for their skin!
