Football season is here and we’re getting ready on every level! Middle school has started for our son and every Sunday is spent in front of the television watching the winners and the squares in our football pool. Along with all of the excitement around the game comes even more excitement around the food and friends we share it with. We love shopping at Save-A-Lot during this time of year because we can get the same great quality we are used to getting with an even bigger savings. Save-A-Lot has all of the essentials to throw an epic tailgating party at great every day low prices!
As you can see, we bought a ton of party food at Save-A-Lot. We love the location on Evangeline St. in Baton Rouge. They always have the freshest produce and great service. Shopping at a location we are familiar with is always and additional perk to getting the snacks we enjoy at a price I love. There is also the added convenience of being able to pick up the serving essentials at a great price while we are at Save-A-Lot. We picked up paper plates, paper towels, and plastic cutlery for eating. Join the Smart Shopper Club and you can get the latest specials delivered straight to your inbox!
As you know, shopping for a large family and shopping with kids is not always easy. It seems that, as they get older, it doesn’t get any easier. They “Mom, can I have?” and “Mom, did you see this?” does not slow down. It is times like these when I am happy that Save-A-Lot has everything I need in one location and at a great price! We were able to buy enough goodies to feed 20 of our closest friends for less than $30! That is huge, my friends, HUGE! You can view the weekly ad of your local Save-A-Lot!
Now, it was time to head home and start putting together our Sunday game-day party snacks. I have become a huge fan of buying Chex Mix and dressing it up a bit instead of making it from scratch. The cost is less, since I am not making a huge batch, and it is so much easier! Here is my recipe for “spicing up” my Chex Mix:
- Pour 1 “value size” bag of Chex Mix into mixing bowl.
- Pour mixture of 1/4 stick of butter, 1 T of Worcestershire sauce, and 1 t of hot sauce over the Chex Mix in bowl and stir.
- Spread the Chex Mix mixture, in a single layer, onto a cookie sheet.
- Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 6 minutes.
- Carefully remove the Chex Mix from the oven and allow to cool before pouring into a serving bowl.
- Serve and ENJOY!
Another huge hit around our house during football season is BBQ smoked sausage. You can substitute li’l smokies if you want, but regular smoked sausage, cut into bite sized pieces tastes just as good for half the price! The recipe I use and my family loves is below:
- Cut 2 pounds of smoked sausage into bite sized pieces and add to 3 quart sauce pan.
- Turn heat on Medium and add 2 cups of your favorite BBQ sauce, 1 T of your favorite hot sauce, 2 T of brown sugar, and 1 T of apple cider vinegar.
- Cover the sauce pan and allow to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Carefully pour the mixture with sausage into a heat-proof serving bowl with toothpicks or forks on the side.
- Serve and enjoy!

These are such great ideas for getting everything ready for any sort of party, I have to admit I’m not into football but I will try and incorporate the ideas into other parties I maybe planning.
My favorite occasion for throwing a party is a simple one – getting more than three of my high school friends together at the same time – unfortunately accomplishing that isn’t simple.
Looks like a great party! I’ll have some of the Mississippi mud pie, thanks. Great giveaway!
I threw a super bowl party earlier this year, and I don’t know if I’ll do another! I made too much food and it was just all wasted! 🙁 But these are great ideas, I’ll have to share this with my mom!
My favorite occasion to throw a party is a birthday party for our kids. We can have cake and ice cream for other gatherings, but for a birthday party, it is guaranteed!!
