How many Facebook “friends” do you have? Most people on Facebook have hundreds, if not thousands, of Facebook friends. Let me start out by saying that I LOVE Facebook. Facebook allows me to find awesome deals and I have also been able to reconnect with my very best friend in the whole wide world who lives about 18 hours away, through Facebook. I am going to present to you, a challenge though.
I have recently “un-friended” over half of my Facebook friends!? WHAT?! Yes, I un-friended a TON of my friends from Facebook. Why, you ask? Well, it’s really simple. I feel like I’m not truly connecting with the people who are the most important to me. Although Facebook is a great place to get news, deals, and anything else you may need; it’s not a great place to build relationships, REAL relationships with real people. I have found that we tend to get to “know” people through snippits, sarcasms, and jokes on Facebook. So, my remedy to this was to delete everyone who lives within driving distance of my home! Yep, unless I do business with them or they live further than an hour or two from my house, they got un-friended.Â
My reasoning for this is because I feel that Facebook becomes a barrier to my real relationship with these people who truly are important to myself and my family. We tend to think that people should know what’s going on in our lives because they’re on our Facebook friends list when we should, actually be talking to our family and friends, face-to-face. I have even noticed, in myself, that I don’t speak to my “Facebook friends” as much at church because I feel like they already know what has happened in my life that week. So, I would challenge you to get out and get to know your friends and family; through more than just a status update or cute picture 🙂 Besides, I always love trying to find ways to balance social media with my social life.
What do you think? Are you up for the challenge?
