DIY Homemade Dishwasher Detergent. You are absolutely going to love this DIY Homemade Dishwasher Detergent that you can make at home with just 2 ingredients!
So, you want to be thrifty, but coupons aren’t enough or you simply want to save more! If you ‘re like me, you just like trying new stuff 🙂 Well, today I tried a recipe I have been wanting to try for a while. Homemade laundry detergent. There are countless variations of this recipe, but if you know me; you know that I go for simple and efficient. This recipe is BOTH! My dishes came out cleaner than with the brand name detergent I normally use. Are you ready for this?!
- Mix equal parts of both (I only used 1/2 cup of each because I wasn’t sure if I’d like it):
- Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda, it’s not the same thing)
- Borax (I use the Mule brand)
- VOILA! There you have it!
- ~Use 2 tablespoons of the mixture per full load of dishes.~
* I recommend using 2 tablespoons of white vinegar as a rinse agent also because some people have complained of a film on their dishes.

I use borax, washing soda, and ivory soap for my laundry detergent and LOVE IT! I also use vinegar and baking soda as fabric softener and love it too! Go Green!
We have really hard water and this didn’t work as well as I had hoped when I tried it three weeks ago. I would love to be able to save money on this, but so far I can’t make my own. I’ve been doing laundry soap for almost two years and I only spend a fraction of what I used to, plus- the kids don’t get mystery rashes anymore. 🙂
Did you put vinegar in as a rinse agent? I have hard water too and it worked great 🙂
Sadly there isn’t a store around me that carries washing soda…. gonna have to look into buying it online….

All of our local Walmarts carry it on the bottom shelf of the laundry detergent aisle. Our Super 1 Foods also carries it on the laundry aisle 🙂
Ive been told that you can buy large quantities of washing soda (aka sodium carbonate/ soda ash) from pool supply stores… it is used to condition pool water. 🙂
Wal-mart or a store like such should have it. Grocery stores usually carry it too.
Trying different recipes for the dishwasher. So far not very impressed due to extreme cloudiness on my dishes. I love being frugal but I have to have the same Results or better results for my time . I’m open for suggestions,

There is a website you find by searching ‘jabs diy’. Their recipe uses citric acid which aids in eliminating ‘cloudiness’. Vinegar also helps.

I use a recipe that uses the washing soda, borax, sea salt and lemonade koolaid. I don’t have the cloudiness issue. I also use the vinegar in my rinse.
I also would like to know where u add the vinegar. My dishwasher has a spot for the jet dry, but it holds only a certain amount and it doesn’t let it all out at one time. . .
You add the vinegar in the same place you would add Jet Dry 😀
I can’t wait to try this one! I see that Jenn Wilmer used lemonade koolaid to solve cloudiness problem. Since I have hard water, I would like to try this also. Does it have to be koolaid brand? How much do I use? Can I still use jet-dri? Will it solve cloudiness problem?
